Masterton District Council has given new meaning to the term "Queen Street farming", having ventured into selling baleage cropped from its Homebush site.
To be fair, there is a full-time farmer on the council, being David Holmes, and one or two others have a little land and a rural aspect. But initial investigation into the sale of the baleage is being assigned to assets manager David Hopman.
At this week's policy and finance committee meeting, Mr Hopman said 41 per cent of the cut has been sold for $85 a bale, having "actively advertised across the country".
Mr Hopman said there have been several proposals put to him over the sale of the remainder, including some offers to bulk buy the baleage.
The council is using the experience of Taupo District Council in selling baleage as a blueprint for what it might decide but is to consider all options open to it at a closed meeting.
