There has been a call to quicken up the process for holiday makers heading north of Auckland by introducing a text message payment option on the Northern Gateway Toll Road.
NZTA is investigating the idea, but said a lot of work needs to be done before it can be made both cost effective and simple for users.
Auckland Councillor Cameron Brewer said that was not good enough.
He said drivers are having to endure more unnecessary delays this holiday period when there is an easy fix.
"Given that you can text a car park, you can text talent shows on television who you want to win and you can text donations for the likes of the Christchurch earthquake, you should be able to text a toll payment through," he said.
