KEY POINTS:
Horizons Regional Council is on the hunt for rooks and wants to hear from anyone who has spotted a new rookery in the region.
"We carry out surveying, followed by aerial poisoning of rooks every year, so it's a big help for us if we know of any new rookeries that have been spotted," Horizons environmental management officer Ray Wilman said today.
Rooks were classed as an animal pest and when allowed to multiply unchecked could damage crops.
Rooks preferred to set up for breeding in tall pine or eucalyptus trees and would be seen living around the trees at this time of the year, Mr Wilman said.
Anyone who spotted a new rookery should contact Horizons on freephone 0508 800 800.
Horizons Regional Council is the regional authority over Tararua, Horowhenua, Manawatu, Palmerston North City, Rangitikei, Wanganui and Ruapehu. It also encompasses some parts of Taupo, Stratford and Waitomo Districts.
