Reelected Palmerston North councillor Lew Findlay thinks there are plenty of creative options for the council to lower its debt and control rates.
Findlay said the council replaced its fleet vehicles every four years, a year before their guarantee expired. Replacing the vehicles just before the guarantee expiry would save considerable money.
Findlay, who has served four terms as a city councillor, wants to encourage more business to Palmerston North by revitalising Broadway Street, the smaller equivalent of Auckland's Queen Street.
He also wants to lower the rates and manage the city debt. Findlay said he wanted to instil more pride in the Rose City, a city he considered the best in the country for raising a family.
Findlay said he knew how to work with people and pointed to his success with community-based programmes such as Street Van Palmerston North, which he has led for almost 20 years. The programme has 500 volunteers and helps people with drug and alcohol problems.
