Council offers pet burial plots

Christchurch City Council is offering plots at a local reserve where people can bury the remains of their pets.

Council inspections and enforcement manager Gary Lennan said 60 plots at the Groynes Recreational Reserve had been sectioned off and marked on a map.

It was not a pet cemetery, he said, but "rather a tribute to a cherished pet".

Plot buyers could choose from a range of native trees to plant.

The standard cost for the plot and tree package was $75, with a concrete ground marker costing another $25 and a steel plaque another $10.

The memorial park will allow owners to "share cherished memories of their pets alongside other pet owners", Mr Lennan said.

"This meaningful gesture will keep the spirit of a lost loved one alive."
