A drunken April Fool's Day prank has cost a Christchurch man $750 and landed him with a theft conviction.
Joseph Alfred Bernard, 26, a brewery worker, pleaded guilty in Christchurch District Court to stealing a MiG fighter jet cockpit canopy worth $6000.
Police prosecutor Nigel Wolland told Judge John Bisphan that Bernard took the canopy from the aircraft while it was on display outside a bar in central Christchurch.
Bernard's lawyer, Leuatea Iosefa, said the incident happened on April Fool's Day and was a prank that got out of hand.
Judge Bisphan fined him $750.
