A former Turangi prison guard has been jailed for 16 months after accepting a bribe to buy dope for an inmate.
Manu Stanley Jensen, 45, received the sentence in Rotorua District Court this morning after earlier pleading guilty to a charge of corruption.
While working as a guard at Rangipo Prison in 2009, Jensen had $2200 deposited into his bank account by an inmate to buy four ounces of cannabis and some eye drops.
Jensen, who the court heard was dealing with a marriage break-up at the time, was approached three times by two prisoners to bring cannabis into the prison.
After turning down an initial offer, he eventually agreed to another and spent $1418 on cannabis, being told he could keep the change.
