Former deputy police commissioner Barry Matthews is the Corrections Department's new chief executive, State Services Commissioner Mark Prebble announced yesterday.
Mr Matthews is currently Western Australia Police Commissioner, a position held since 1999.
He was with the New Zealand police from 1965-1999, serving as deputy commissioner from 1995-1999.
He presided over the Incis controversy - a computer system which went tens of millions of dollars over budget and several years over time before being pulled.
Dr Prebble said Mr Matthews was experienced at chief executive level and had a proven track record.
"He has experience in personnel and financial management, strategic and corporate planning," he said in a statement.
"He has experience in managing relationships with staff, stakeholders and the community in circumstances which have, at times, been contentious, and has gained their respect."
He replaces Mark Byers, who has taken early retirement.
