Members of the public have helped to locate the owner of two dogs which fatally attacked a seal in Tairua on the Coromandel Peninsula on Monday.
Two pitbull-type dogs were seen to attack a small seal, causing fatal injuries, said Senior Constable Matt Goodman.
The dogs were seen being put into a car and a member of the public gave the registration number to police.
A man has since been spoken to by police and was confirmed as being the dogs' owner, Mr Goodman said.
An investigation was under way to determine what charges might result, Mr Goodman said.
