The name of a motorcyclist, killed in a fiery head-on collision on a Coromandel holiday highway, has been released by police.
Sandra Joy Evans, 51, from Dairy Flat north of Auckland, died after her motorcycle collided with an oncoming car on Kopu-Hikuai Rd, east of Thames, about 3pm Tuesday.
"Ms Evans had been riding with a male partner who was a short distance ahead of her, when it appears she crossed the centre-line into the path of an oncoming car," Sergeant Jim Corbett of Thames police said.
Both vehicles caught fire. The occupants of the car were shaken but unhurt, and managed to get out and drag the woman clear of the fire.
Ms Evans, who had been on a learners' license, suffered critical injuries.
