A Coromandel bach has beaten several multi-million dollar competitors to scoop one of the country's most prestigious architectural prizes.
Local architect Ken Crosson has been awarded New Zealand Home and Entertaining magazine's 'home of the decade' prize.
Crosson designed the winning home, essentially a timber box, for himself and his family in 2002.
Since its completion, the bach has garnered huge international attention and has even featured in a series of Japanese commercials.
Judge Glenn Murcutt says the bach won the title thanks to its ingenuity, unpretentious design and attention to detail.
Some of the bach's features include front and rear decks which can be lifted up with electric winches to form walls when the Crossons are not home.
