A hostage drama in Christchurch has ended, police have said.
Morley Avenue was earlier cordoned off and armed officers deployed after reports a woman was being held hostage by an armed man just after midday.
The situation has since been resolved and the woman is safe, police said. Cordons in the area have been lifted.
n a media statement released earlier, Inspector Alan Weston said: "It is believed that a woman is being held hostage by a male with a firearm."
He added: "The public are advised that no one will be allowed into the area until the situation is resolved."
One witness, named as Bob, told Newstalk ZB that he and his flatmates had been told by police to stay in their home.
He said about 20 officers were at the scene.
