KEY POINTS:
The weather system bringing spring storms to Auckland this week may also lead to a cooler summer than usual, weather analysts predict.
The Weather Watch Centre said that in the next 24 hours three fronts would move over the city, bringing gales and heavy rain.
Analyst Philip Duncan said the country was in a "neutral" weather period that favoured prevailing westerly winds, meaning a cooler summer was likely for Auckland. The summer weather would be somewhere between the warm, dry El Nino and cool, wet La Nina weather systems.
"This is typical for October - it is when we get the stormiest of our spring weather."
Mr Duncan said the storms would be "a bit of a shock to the system" after the high temperatures and fine weather Auckland had experienced lately.
"The temperature will probably hover around 16 or 17, but with wind chill it might seem like 13 or 14 degrees."
