With temperatures reaching 28C yesterday, swimming was probably on the minds of many.
But one group of teenagers clearly believed in earning their dip.
Ten students from Wairarapa College hostel biked a 30km two-hour dusty round trip from Masterton to a popular swimming hole on the Waingawa River, off Upper Plain Rd yesterday.
When the Times-Age reporter arrived, several were keen to demonstrate their bravery for the paper by leaping into a deep water hole from what looked to be a 10-metre high cliff.
Supervisor Sharon Haeata, who accompanied the bikers in a van, said they organise an activity for the hostel every weekend. "Today we decided to come bike riding. We're never sitting around doing nothing. It's good to get them away from the hostel at least one day a week."
