The secret to a good Mother's Day? It's all about the food.
Five and six-year-olds at Ponsonby Primary School were hard at work yesterday decorating iced biscuits for their mums.
Mother-help Phillipa Stephenson baked 120 heart-shaped gingerbread biscuits for the Year 1 children to decorate and give to their mums tomorrow.
She came up with the idea for the school's developmental activities, where parents help children with various learning activities.
"Not enough baking is done in schools these days. Some kids don't get to do this at home any more," she said.
"It's also about making sure mothers get something on Mother's Day," Ms Stephenson said.
Her son, Nathaniel, 5, chose several blue biscuits to decorate, because it was his favourite colour.
Meanwhile, at St Mary's School in Northcote, children in Rooms 11 and 12 were busy making handmade cards.
Room 11 pupils had individual photos taken for their cards, while Room 12 had a whole-class picture taken, to go with a message they came up with together as a class.
And while the cards will be popular, Isaac Rockell, 6, agreed food was the perfect way to celebrate Mother's Day.
"I think I might make my Mum breakfast. I like making breakfast."
