Interislander ferry sailings have been cancelled, along with all trains on the North Island Main Trunk Line south of Palmerston North and in the South Island, KiwiRail spokeswoman Alex Beedell says.
The services were cancelled until further notice, Beedell said.
"Further updates will be available throughout the morning ... ferry sailings have been cancelled until a full assessment can be made of the terminals in Wellington and Picton. There have been no injuries reported."
An assessment would take place after daylight.
"The Kaiarahi is currently standing off Picton and the Kaitaki and Aratere are at anchor in Wellington Harbour."
