KEY POINTS:
A convicted rapist who kidnapped another man while on parole was today sentenced to a further 14 months' in jail.
Hiro Joe, 24, was sentenced in Wellington District Court today on charges of kidnapping, drink-driving, dangerous driving and breaching parole conditions.
The offending happened on December 30 last year, five months after Joe was released on parole after being jailed for six years for raping a 15-year-old girl in 2002.
Joe was drinking with friends in a park in Porirua and was very drunk.
About midday the victim drove Joe to two different addresses but the occupants would not let him in because he was so drunk.
Joe then took the man's keys and ordered him out of his car. The victim was concerned Joe would take his car so got into the passenger seat.
Joe drove erratically, at times at speeds of up to 140km/h. The victim pleaded with him to stop but he wouldn't. The victim tried to get out of the car at a red light but Joe ran the light and he was unable to escape.
The police caught up with Joe at Raumati where he was found to have an alcohol level of 838mcg, just over twice the legal limit.
Judge Denys Barry said Joe was remorseful and had a problem with alcohol.
"Clearly you wouldn't have done it if you hadn't been as drunk as you were," the judge said.
"You had just begun work fulltime and effectively you just ruined everything that you had."
Because he offended on parole Joe had already been recalled to prison to continue serving his rape sentence and the 14 months' jail imposed today was on top of that.
