KEY POINTS:
National's Rakaia MP Brian Connell has decided to quit Parliament at the next election.
He met party leader John Key this morning to tell him he was not going to seek selection as a candidate.
"The situation has been amicably resolved and I wish Mr Connell the best for the future," Mr Key said in a brief statement.
Mr Connell, 50, was suspended from National's caucus in September 2006 after he asked questions about the private life of Don Brash, who was party leader at the time.
The caucus row reached the media, and Mr Connell was blamed for that. He denied he had leaked details.
The suspension left him isolated in Parliament, with no work to do on behalf of his party.
The disappearance of his electorate when boundaries were changed made his situation even more difficult.
