Wairarapa United should have too many guns for Red Sox Manawatu in their Chatham Cup knockout football match at Memorial Park, Palmerston North, on Sunday.
As coach Phil Keinzley has said there will be no excuses if Wairarapa United lose to a side that plays some three tiers below them on the club scene and that's despite the fact they will be missing four of their regular squad members in Nobuyishi Ishi, Nathan Cooksley, Adam Milne and Martin Pereyra.
Keinzley is also mindful of the number of upsets which regularly occur in Chatham Cup matches.
He only has to reflect on what happened to Miramar Rangers when they met Napier City Rovers a couple of weeks back for evidence of that, with NCR thumping the defending champions 5-0.
The longer Wairarapa United allow Red Sox to stay in the game the more dangerous they will become as their confidence will grow.
It's no wonder Keinzley will be stressing the need for his side to score early and keep the pressure on.
"We have to get on top and take the steam out of them, otherwise it could be a long day at the office," he said.
Keinzley also wants Wairarapa United to be more clinical in their finishing work as a lack of efficiency in that area has marred many of their central league games this season.
The versatile Adam Cowan is again likely to operate as a lone striker with other key members of the attack in Seule Soromon and Dale Higham playing on the flanks of a midfield also including Scott Robson, Pita Rabo and Mirsolav Tvaroh.
Douglas Villa have moved to third on the Capital third division points table and they will have the opportunity to consolidate that position when they meet fourth-placed Lower Hutt City at Memorial Drive grounds tomorrow, starting at 2.30pm.
Leading the Capital fourth division series are the Wairarapa United seconds and they should continue on their winning way when they play University Scarfies at Kelburn tomorrow, kick-off at 12.30pm.
