KEY POINTS:
The police and Department of Labour have begun investigating the death of a worker hit by falling steel at a construction site in Auckland yesterday.
Emergency services were called to the site at Mainzeal Property and Construction on Ormiston Rd, East Tamaki, just after 10.30am.
The dead man was a self-employed contractor who had worked 20 years in construction, Mainzeal's chief operating officer Peter Gomm said.
He was killed when steel dislodged while being unloaded from a truck.
Mr Gomm said the company was deeply concerned about the incident and he extended his sympathies to the man's family.
