A man who tried to enter New Zealand by stowing away on a container ship has been deported.
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) said the man, a former employee of the shipping company, stowed away after being unable to secure employment.
He was discovered en route by the ship's master, and the company notified INZ of his presence on board, said compliance manager Natalie Gardiner.
"INZ officers, along with colleagues from Customs and police, met the boat on its arrival at Lyttelton on Friday last week. The stowaway was detained by police and arrangements were made for him to depart on the first available flight."
The stowaway left New Zealand on Saturday.
