A construction worker has died following a suspected medical event while working on Watercare’s Central Interceptor project in Auckland’s Māngere this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to a Greenwood Rd address in the South Auckland suburb about 3.25pm.
A Watercare spokesperson said the construction team member died at the scene despite best efforts to revive him.
The worker was employed by Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture, the contractor delivering the project.
Ghella Abergeldie JV project director Francesco Saibene said the incident had greatly saddened the entire Central Interceptor team.
“We are shocked to hear that one of our workers has passed away suddenly. We are a close team, and this is very upsetting news for all of us.
“We offer our condolences and support to his family at this very sad time,” said Saibene.
Watercare Central Interceptor executive programme director Shayne Cunis said Watercare would be supporting its contractor and staff as they come to terms with the devastating event.
“We are also assisting both the police and WorkSafe as they conduct their investigations into this matter.”
Police earlier said the death was not being treated as suspicious and Worksafe had been notified.
Hato Hone St John responded an ambulance, a first response vehicle, operations manager and a rapid response vehicle to the scene but referred all other questions to police.
WorkSafe said it was making initial inquiries.
