The road was dry and the weather fine when two vehicles collided head-on east of Taupo, leaving two people dead and two others seriously injured, police said today.
All four men involved in yesterday's crash were from Taupo.
Inquiries were continuing into the 6.30pm incident, when a Toyota utility vehicle crossed the centre line on to the wrong side of the road and collided with a Nissan four-wheel-drive.
The crash happened on Taharua Rd, off the Napier-Taupo highway and about 25km east of Taupo, Constable Patricia Foden said.
The Toyota ute driver, 30, and his passenger, 18, were killed as a result of the crash. Their names have not yet been released.
