Police are concerned at increasing reports of illegal hunting and spotlighting in Nelson Bays.
Sergeant Rob Crawford said there had been reports of spotlighting in the Dovedale area, and it was believed those involved were using silencers and may have access to night vision equipment.
"People wandering around in the dark with firearms in areas they are not authorised to be in is a huge risk for other members of the community and we take this very seriously," he said.
"Every legitimate firearms owner is well aware of their responsibilities and the penalties they may face if they're found to be breaching their licence conditions."
Mr Crawford said several sheep carcases were also found recently in forestry near Wai-iti, and police would like to hear from anyone who has lost black-headed sheep in recent weeks.
