Canterbury police are concerned about the number of drivers crossing the centre line on highways and rural roads.
During one weekend in September, police issued 50 infringements to motorists who crossed the centre line on a blind bend on State Highway 7 at Lewis Pass, an area which killed five people in three separate head-on crashes during 2007.
Sergeant John Hamilton of the Canterbury Highway Patrol says motorists were continuing to break the law despite an ongoing public campaign on the need to keep left,
"It's disappointing that we are still seeing numerous drivers prepared to engage in high risk behaviour and put themselves and other road users in danger," he says.
"Any one of these vehicles could have caused a head-on collision which would have had devastating results."
