The search for a missing 64-year-old Manawatu man continues today as concerns grow for his wellbeing.
John Campbell was last seen by his family leaving his home on the outskirts of Pahiatua, near Palmerston North, for work in Pahiatua at 6.45am yesterday.
When Mr Campbell did not return, his family made enquiries themselves, before calling police around midnight.
Mr Campbell's car, a white Toyota Starlet, has been parked at the intersection of Woodlands and Oxford roads in Woodville around 7am yesterday.
Police said Mr Campbell did not know anyone in Woodville and had no reason to be there. They said he was in good physical health, had no known medical conditions and his disappearance was completely out of character.
Police, aided by a tracking dog, have been searching roads in the area throughout the morning. A larger team of police and volunteers from Palmerston North and the Tararua has been put together to search bush and local farms. Around 10 local people have also offered to assist and will be used in the search.
Overnight the weather was mild, dry and overcast but this morning the cloud level has dropped and rain has set in increasing concerns for the missing man.
Mr Campbell is around 175 cm tall, of skinny build and has greying hair cut with short back and sides. He was last seen wearing grey drill shorts and John Bull work boots.
Anyone with information on Mr Campbell's whereabouts should contact either the Palmerston North Police on 06 351 3600 or Sergeant Andy Brooke Palmerston North Search and Rescue on 027 499 0180.
