KEY POINTS:
Police are concerned for the safety of a Polish tramper who failed to return from a day tramp in the Wellington area on Saturday.
Jacek Grzybowski, 28, a computer software engineer, left on Saturday morning to go for a day walk to either the Belmont Regional Park or into the Rimutaka Forest Park.
His flatmates, also Polish, became increasingly worried when he did not return home on Saturday evening.
They had not been sure what to do and told their employer yesterday who contacted police. Police said it was difficult to start a physical search when they did not know what track he went on. Search and Rescue staff were making background inquiries to see if Mr Grzybowski had bought any maps.
His flatmates had told police they had not seen him leave and did not know clothing or equipment, apart from a dark green and black gortex jacket and a small black backpack, he had with him. Mr Grzybowski, a visitor from Poland, had been living and working in Wellington for the last few months.
Police said he did not have a car and would have either hitchhiked or used public transport.
