KEY POINTS:
Christchurch police have named a mother of three who disappeared from her home early on Tuesday in freezing weather, wearing only a nightdress.
Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey said Joan Lorraine Catlow, 39, left her suburban Dallington home shortly after midnight and police and her family had serious concerns for her well-being.
Mr Harvey said the disappearance was out of character but foul play was not an issue at this stage. Mrs Catlow has not contacted family.
Police have today been scouring an area alongside the Avon River in the suburb of Avonside.
Mr Harvey urged anyone in the area to check their properties in case she had taken shelter in an outside shed or garage.
The MetService has forecast temperatures in the city to plummet tonight to just 1degC.
Mrs Catlow was described as Caucasian, of slim, small build with long dark hair. She was wearing a blue satin nightdress and a maroon towelling robe but no footwear.
