Police are becoming increasing concerned about the welfare of a 58-year-old Christchurch woman suffering from Alzheimers, who has been missing since yesterday afternoon.
Irene Andrews was last seen at her Bower Avenue home in New Brighton at 2pm yesterday.
Detective Terry Falloon said Mrs Andrews was fit and capable of walking long distances.
"Mrs Andrews has very poor communication skills and is unable to adequately care for herself," Mr Falloon said.
Police have no idea where Mrs Andrews would go, and it was unlikely she would be able to ask for help, he said.
She is described as having short fair hair, a fair complexion and wearing lightweight clothing of black pants, a black and white shirt and carrying a black shoulder bag.
"Police are concerned for Mrs Andrews' welfare, particularly with the change in weather conditions, and ask the public to check around their properties in case Mrs Andrews has sought shelter," Mr Falloon said.
