A Kauri products company will pay $50,000 after a man's fingers were sliced off by a rotating saw.
The man was flown from Kaitaia to Auckland and underwent 20 hours of surgery to have his fingers reattached in August last year.
Kaitaia District Court fined Ancient Kauri Wood Products Limited $30,000 and ordered it to pay a further $20,000 in reparation.
Department of Labour service manager Rob Gibbon said the injury was "gruesome" and could have been prevented.
"He was working with a revolving blade that was exposed and could be reached from a number of angles because the guards on the machine were either inadequate or nonexistent," Mr Gibbon said.
