Commuter delays after man hit by train in Avondale and hospitalised with moderate injuries

Commuters travelling in West Auckland faced delays earlier this evening after a man was hit by a train in Avondale.

Emergency services were called to the incident shortly before 5pm and the man was taken to hospital with moderate injuries following the collision.

The incident occurred at St Jude St and resulted in the closure of roads and the Western railway line in the area for a short time this evening.

The street was closed between Donegal St and Layard St around 5.30pm as emergency services worked to clear a train blocking it.

Auckland Transport tweeted the street was cleared and fully reopened to motorists at 6.10pm.

Train services on the Western line were temporarily terminated at Morningside, with no services operating between Morningside and New Lynn.

AT arranged shuttled to operate between New Lynn and Swanson for trapped commuters and scheduled buses accepted train tickets on the Western line.

Around 6.30pm AT tweeted Western line services were back operating between Morningside and New Lynn.

Commuters using the line should expect some delays as services return to schedule.

Elsewhere, motorists are also facing delays on the Southern Motorway and Great South Rd due to crashes.

A crash on the motorway took place at Mt Wellington and is now clear of the lanes, according to NZ Transport Agency.

However, traffic congestion heading south is "moderate to heavy" from Ellerslie, and then heavy again from Manukau to Hill Rd.

A crash on Great South Rd, meanwhile, is still blocking the left southbound lane at the road's intersection with the Southern Motorway.

Traffic is heavy but easing, heading west on the Northwestern Motorway from Rosebank to Te Atatu Rd, and flowing well on the Northern Motorway.
