KEY POINTS:
A Stokes Valley man has been sentenced to 150 hours community work and 15 months intensive supervision , for performing an indecent act on a six-year-old girl.
Alex Atack, 21, was sentenced at Wellington District Court today by Judge Mike Behrens, after earlier pleading guilty.
Judge Behrens said he took into account that the only reason the offending had come to light was because Atack had gone voluntarily to Lower Hutt police station to tell them what he had done.
The offending had taken place in September 2006 when Atack had got the girl to touch and hold onto his genitals.
About a year later, after he had attended a programme for sexual offenders, Atack confessed his actions to the police.
Judge Behrens said there had to be a punitive aspect to his punishment.
As well as the community work and supervision, Judge Behrens ordered Atack to take a psychological evaluation, attend the Wellstop programme for sexual offenders and any other programmes recommended by his probation officer.
Atack was also ordered not to be in contact with anyone under 16-years-old without approved adult supervision.
