The dangerous state of the pitch meant less than two overs were bowled on the second day of the Bidwell Cup match between Greytown and Wairarapa College at Greytown on Saturday.
Play was suspended after the opening over delivered by Central Stag Seth Rance saw balls rising sharply off a good length on a dampish wicket and the same situation occurred when it resumed two hours later. Just three balls were bowled before the umpires abandoned the match.
Greytown had declared their first innings closed at 196-5 after Wairarapa College had been dismissed for 113 in their first turn at bat.
It is likely the pitch conditions at Greytown will be the subject of an inquiry by Cricket Wairarapa over the next few days.
Former Central Districts age group and Wairarapa senior representative Dean van Deventer blazed 93 runs off just 49 balls as Red Star beat Flight Centre Lansdowne with nine balls to spare in their More FM Twenty20 cricket match at the Park Sportsground in Masterton on Saturday.
Chasing Lansdowne's 151 for 7 Red Star had van Deventer - returning from a stint in Canterbury where he made that province's under-20 side - open their innings and he showed his intent with a six from his first scoring shot. He hit two more of them and 11 fours.
Fellow opener Charlie Bevan wasn't as aggressive as van Deventer but still made 31 off 38 balls and Robbie Anderson (17 not out) and Jared Watt (9 not out) ensured Red Star got home comfortably, finishing at 155-2.
