Cold weather spell hits the South Island

There are chilly conditions in the south today.

It is just eight degrees this afternoon in a number of centres, including Invercargill, Dunedin, Queenstown and Timaru. It is not much warmer in Christchurch, where it has hit 10 degrees.

In Wellington it is 13.

Weatherwatch.co.nz says the cold air is not moving aggressively, so areas further north should not see a dramatic change in current conditions.
