A rapid drop in temperature hit Southland this afternoon as a cold snap is set to move across the rest of New Zealand.
WeatherWatch said the temperature in Invercargill dropped to just 10C before 5pm, down from 20C earlier in the day.
The cold snap was beginning to move into Otago and would cross Canterbury overnight and tomorrow morning.
The chilly weather would then move across the North Island during the day, reaching Auckland and Northland in the afternoon or evening.
WeatherWatch said the cold snap comes after hot northwesterlies, with 30C temperatures recorded in Napier and Hastings today.
