A cold front is expected to sweep northwards over the South Island tomorrow, followed by very cold southerlies and a period of cold rain, MetService says.
Rain is likely to turn to snow to about 600 to 700 metres in Southland and Otago for a time tomorrow morning, then in Canterbury during the afternoon and early evening, and in Marlborough during the evening and early Saturday morning.
Accumulations of 5 to 10cm are possible in these areas above about 700 metres, MetService said.
It advised travellers in these regions snow was likely to affect higher roads and mountain passes.
Cold rain is expected to hit Lindis Pass from late tomorrow morning and Milford Rd from tonight, with 1-2cm of snow possible at the summit of the pass and near the Milford Rd tunnel.
MetService said farmers should note the combination of snow or cold rain, along with very cold southerly winds, will likely put stress on vulnerable stock.
