Radical changes are being mooted for the format of the Wairarapa senior men's inter-club cricket competitions in the 2010-11 season.
The three clubs and two secondary schools likely to be involved have been asked to consider proposals from Wairarapa Cricket Association administration officer Chris Cogdale. They would see the retention of some two-day matches and the introduction of a one-innings concept in which games would be played under a two-day structure similar to that used in the English league. The Umpire's Cup limited-overs competition and a Twenty20 championship would also be held.
Under Cogdale's plan, which he admits might need some tinkering, next season would run from October 9 this year to March 27 next year.
The normal Bidwell Cup two-day series would see each team playing two two-day matches plus six one-innings matches with the top two teams meeting in a two-day final to be played on March 5 and 6 under extended hours as in recent seasons.
Play in the two-day games would end at 7pm with a minimum of 104 overs in a day's play (16.5 overs per hour) with sessions running from noon to 2.10pm, 2.30pm to 4.40pm and 5pm to 7pm.
Bonus points would be allocated on the first innings: 1 point for 150 runs or 2 wickets, 2 points for 175 runs or 4 wickets, 3 points for 200 runs or 6 wickets, 4 points for 225 runs or 8 wickets and 5 points for 250 runs 9 nine wickets.
Other points: first innings win, 5; first innings loss, 0; first innings tie, 3; no result, 3; outright results (additional to first innings points) 10 for outright win, 5 for outright tie and 0 for outright loss.
The format for the one innings-games would see play running from noon to 7pm, again with a minimum of 104 overs. The team batting first would have to declare by the 60th over, unless they declared earlier or were all out. Fielding restrictions and wides would occur as they would in a two-day fixture but no bowler would be allowed to bowl more than 15 overs.
Bonus points would be allocated as per the two-day game while 10 points would be received for an outright win, 5 for a tie, 5 for a winning draw, 3 for a losing draw, 3 for no result and none for an outright loss.
An outright win could be secured by the team batting first having had the higher score and completely dismissing the team batting second, or the team batting second having passed the total of the team batting first.
A tie would occur when the scores were level and there was no further play, a winning draw when the team batting first had the higher score but had not completely dismissed the team batting second, a losing draw when the team batting second had scored less runs than the team batting first but was not all out and a no-result when play was abandoned before the second innings started.
Cogdale also proposes the Umpire's Cup competition be played over five preliminary rounds with the top two sides involved in a grand final while the Twenty20 championship would involve one full round of matches, the first games being played midweek in early December with a finals weekend on January 29/30.
