Coffee with a hint of kiwifruit has taken Christchurch barista Carl Sara to the front rank of coffee makers, today finishing sixth at the 2004 World Barista Championships in Trieste, Italy.
A total of 37 baristi took part in the competition, eventually taken out by Norwegian Tim Wendelboe who won after competitors prepared four espressos, four cappuccinos and four 'signature' espresso-based drinks.
From Muffin Break in Christchurch, one of Mr Sara's signature drinks featured a hint of kiwifruit giving the international judging panel a true taste of New Zealand.
The top baristi from first to sixth were, Norway's Tim Wendelboe, Salvatore Piccolo of Canada, Klaus Thomsen of Denmark, Njall Bjorgvisson from Iceland, Joseph El Khoury of Lebanon, and New Zealand's Carl Sara.
