Auckland Coastguard spent much of last night searching for a missing kayaker on the northern side of Waiheke Island.
Two kayakers got into trouble paddling from Thumb Point to Onetangi Bay. One of the men came ashore at about 10pm and raised the alarm.
With winds gusting up to 30 knots and two metre swells there were concerns for the remaining man's safety.
Six boats searched the coastline and surrounding area, but the missing kayaker eventually made his own way to shore.
The search was stood down shortly after midnight.
