Coastguard New Zealand is urging boaties to check their vessels before heading out on the water this summer after an increase in radio calls for help.
In July and September, the primary maritime search and rescue service answered 29,239 radio calls (3654 more than last year) received 839 calls for assistance (312 more) and assisted 780 individuals (188 more).
Coastguard chief executive Bruce Reid said the increase in activity towards the end of winter and the start of spring indicated people had been taking to the water earlier than usual.
"It's essential people remember to prepare adequately - especially if their boats have been idle over the winter months."
Mr Reid said boaties should look at the batteries that are likely to require charging or replacing, the fuel tanks that may need any old fuel replaced and make sure that safety equipment - flares, lifejackets, torches and locator beacons - have not expired or been misplaced since the boat was last used.
BEFORE SETTING SAIL
* Lodge a trip report with your local Coastguard VHF Radio station.
* Ensure you have enough lifejackets in the correct size for each person.
* Take at least two waterproof methods of communication and all safety equipment.
* Get a marine weather forecast before going boating and monitor the weather while on the water.
* Check the boat and engine before you leave.
* Do not overload.
