Expert advice was given on fitness and conditioning requirements to members of Wairararpa's hockey academy last week.
On hand to discuss those needs, both practically and in theory, was Darryl Cochrane from Massey University who has experience at training at national level, for the Black Caps and the Black Sticks.
His session was followed by an in-squad game, the efforts in which pleased Hockey Wairarapa regional development officer Jesse Workman.
"The enthusiasm and committement has been excellent, you can see the progress being made from week to week in so many ways," he said.
Workman was also delighted with the success of last week's Scorching Summer Clinic which attracted over 60 players. He himself was involved in the coaching process there along with other high profile local players such as Dane Lett, Wendy Hull, Amanda Pottinger and Bridget Blackwood.
This week sees the Wairarapa junior academy trial match and the Summer 6's competition starts in about two weekis time. It replaces indoor hockey this year as it is seen as a better build up for the winter outdoor season.
Three Wairarapa players, Trent Lett, Ben Van Woerkom and Nick Finlayson, are currently trialling for the Wellington under-21 men's team, which is currently the top-ranked side in the country in that age group.
