"We played well at the Champions Trophy, but we didn't play our best hockey. I wasn't happy with how we played in the last game, even though we won the bronze medal."
Hager has two newcomers in his squad of 25, Rhiannon Dennison and Julia King.
The qualification of the men should be a formality, with two of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji winning a spot in London.
Both New Zealand Olympic squads will be trimmed to 16 in June. Before that, however, the Black Sticks women will take on the US in five tests and fly out to San Diego today.
Men's coach Shane McLeod also named his extended Olympic squad and included three newcomers in Shay Neal, Matt L'Huillier and Kane Russell.
He was equally optimistic of his side's chances in London, despite the retirement of prolific drag-flick specialist Hayden Shaw.
"There is an equal density among the teams below Australia and we are well in that group," McLeod said.
The team did not need to improve by much, he said, perhaps 10 per cent in parts of their game.
