Wanted: Outside backs with genuine pace.
That's the message from Wairarapa-Bush coach Kelvin Tantrum after the first four rounds of matches in the premier division club rugby competition.
Tantrum has been ''pretty impressed'' with the overall standard of play in games he has viewed but says there has been a noticeable lack of speedy outside backs complete with the skills to make the most of scoring opportunities presented them. ''There are a couple who have put their hands up but hopefully there are a few more about to make their mark,'' he said. ''When you get to the higher levels it's always a bonus to have pace out wide, it's vital really.''
On a more positive note, Tantrum believes the talent base in other backline positions and right through the forwards is better than it was 12 months ago, with a number of younger players pushing their more experienced counterparts hard for places in the Heartland championship squad.
''Overall, the competition for places is probably as keen as it has been for a long while, it's looking good in that regard,'' he said.
Tantrum expects the Bush sub-union v Wairarapa match to be staged on the Monday of Queen's Birthday weekend to be keenly contested because of the opportunity it would give the players involved-particularly those in the Wairarapa side to enhance their chances of rep selection.
''We don't need to talk about being it a trial, the players already have that in mind,'' he said.
