Hot on the heels of the Wairarapa College 1st XI girls hockey team being runner-up at the national Federation Cup tournament and their winning of the Team of the Year trophy at the Wairarapa secondary schools awards function, their coach is now in the limelight.
Willie Schaefer, who is head of the college's PE department, has been named Logan Brown Coach of the Month award winner for October by Sport Wellington Wairarapa, a distinction that will also see him receive a bag of goodies from sportswear manufacturer ISC Lenco.
Schaefer led his team to the final of the Federation Cup, the top secondary schoolgirls tourney in the country, and they also captured the Wellington secondary schools premier one competition title.
The citation for Schaefer's award said: "He is a truly inspiring person who uses his passion for his sport of hockey and his coaching ability to guide the development of the girls' hockey potential."
