The cards were laid on the table when the Wairarapa regional superleague netball team held a training session on Tuesday night, and coach Kelly Sargent hopes the frankness of the discussions will pay big dividends this weekend.
Sargent said players and management were unanimous in the view that while Wairarapa were capable of footing it with any side in the competition they were not doing themselves full justice on court.
"As a team we can compete with anyone, the problem is we haven't always being playing as a team," Sargent said.
With a win, draw and loss record from their opening three games Wairarapa are still in with a chance of making the playoffs but they will probably need to beat both St Marys Old Girls in Masterton tomorrow night and Taita at Taita on Sunday to remain as serious contenders.
On paper at least it will be SMOG who poses the biggest problems as they are at the top of the points table in the pool which includes Wairarapa while Taita are at the very bottom.
Sargent is adamant, however, that Wairarapa need to regard the Taita challenge as every bit as demanding as that against SMOG as upsets had become a regular occurrence this season.
She doesn't expect to finalise her starting line-up for the SMOG match until close to game time, a reflection of her keenness to field a combination which will keep their opposition honest on both attack and defence.
"Right now I'm still struggling to decide what those combinations will be," she said yesterday."
"There are a few options to consider and that's still being worked through."
