An award-winning Waikato netball coach who forged letters from oncologists stating she had cancer in order to get days off work has been sentenced to community work.
Former Waikato premier and Waikato under-19 netball coach Megan Anne Kelly, 34, was yesterday sentenced in the Hamilton District Court on two charges of forging a document and two of using a document for pecuniary advantage, the Waikato Times reported.
She was sentenced to 250 hours' community work and ordered to pay $1779 in reparation, plus $2000 in legal costs incurred by one of her former employers - Netball Waikato.
The judge said Kelly's offending was repetitive and calculated.
The court was told Kelly forged letters claiming she had cancer on two separate occasions.
Police prosecutor Baden Hilton said Netball Waikato, a not-for-profit organisation, had suffered a significant loss due to the offending.
