Wairarapa United held its annual soccer awards over the weekend in Masterton.
Carl Shailer scooped the pool this year, receiving three of the major prizes on offer - Most Improved Player, Supporters Player of the Year and Players Player of the Year.
Shailer, who describes himself as an "attacking defender", admitted he felt "stoked" to receive so many awards.
"Yep, I was really proud," Shailer said. "And shocked as well," he added. "We've got a really skilled and experienced team so it's neat to get that level of recognition from other players of that calibre."
Shailer said he had really enjoyed the past season and was already looking forward to the next.
"Yes, I really am," Shailer said. "And if we can keep everyone on board there's no reason we can't go the whole way in 2011 by winning the league and lifting the Chatham Cup."
Others to receive awards were Adam Cowan, for Club Player of the Year, and Aaron Spierling, for Youth Player of the Year. Kerry Duncan was voted Supporter of the Year and David Leigh was Volunteer of the Year.
Second team awards were presented to Shaun Dunbar, voted Players Player of the Year, while Alex Wardell was awarded Club Player of the Year. Thomas Hemi was Youth Player of the Year and also Most Improved Player.
At the awards, coach Phil Keinzley said both teams had underachieved in the season just completed. Both had started badly but had finished with satisfactory results. "But at the end of the day it's not what either team wanted," Keinzley said. "Since our days in Capital One, we've moved in three-year cycles.
"The first year in each league has been one of consolidation, the second year we have looked to improve on that and the third year we have aimed to win. So next season has to be a big one for us," Keinzley said.
