Close call after car collides with tree

A close call on a rural road in Waiuku left a car badly mangled and a tree stripped of bark - but both the driver and passenger survived.

The incident occurred just before 2pm on Friday.

Two men, both 18, were flown to hospital as a result, Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust spokeswoman Kerrie Spicer said.

It appeared the car had been travelling at speed, lost control and spun into the tree, she said.

A broken fence and flattened greenery can be seen where the incident occurred on a rural road.

The car was severely damaged in the collision and a layer of bark was stripped from part of the tree, extending almost 2m high.

One of the men was in a serious condition and one had moderate injuries when the pair were taken to Middlemore Hospital.

A condition update was not immediately available.
