A climber has been airlifted off a mountain in the Southern Alps this afternoon after falling 9m.
Canterbury District police spokesman Stephen Hill said the climber was taken off Mt Sebastopol near Mt Cook with moderate injuries.
"The 21-year-old climber, a New Zealand citizen from Christchurch, fell 9m while rock-climbing with one other person on the Mt Sebastopol bluffs just south of Mount Cook village.''
He was reported to have suffered a dislocated shoulder, head and other injuries and was being treated at the Mt Cook Search and Rescue base.
It is expected he will be transferred to Timaru hospital this evening by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
