KEY POINTS:
The occupants of a Hamilton house breathed a little easier yesterday after engineers decided a slip below their front lawn would not take the home with it. Emergency services went to the Awatere Ave property in Beerescourt on Tuesday night after rain caused a 10m slip.
The white house was left teetering on the edge of the bank and there were fears it would come down if there were any further slips. The occupants were advised to spend the night elsewhere.
But Hamilton City Council spokeswoman Sarah Bettle said two engineers and an investigation officer spent the morning assessing the $380,000 property and ruled it safe for the residents to return.
Meanwhile, North Shore City Council is waiting to hear from owners of a $1 million Northcote home before deciding if it will have to be demolished. The house was left hanging over a cliff after last month's bad weather caused a massive landslip.
It is understood the owners are working with the Earthquake Commission and will come back to the council with suggestions on whether the house can be saved.
